*For which read 'Norwegian or Swedish or Danish', inclusive 'or', because I don't know if there are that many differences among them. If I find that there are, I'll change it.

**TRUMPET FANFARE** This table is current as of September, 2006. If you notice any omissions or mistakes, let me know please! Oh, and I'll be adding Finnish, Irish and Polish columns really soon, because suddenly I have a lot of names in those languages. It might also be time to make separate Norwegian-Danish and Swedish columns, but I haven't done it yet.

I'm somewhat intrigued by names that translate. I believe that it has to do with Christians wanting saints to have names that fit in with their respective languages, and so many of these names are of course associated with saints.

Please let me know of any mistakes I made or additions you think of. I'm especially wary of my Spanish and French names, and I couldn't remember any Italian ones for some reason. I think I have Johns in Scottish, Irish and Greek (Ian, Eoin and Ioannas, respectively) and a Polish Charles (Karol), so additions in those languages would be especially nice!

And here's something else that has been bothering me: does Diego equal James or Steven?

I will put up an updated table later, after people have a chance to add to it.

Thank you!

Maybe Diego = Doug.

This is a really impressive chart. At first I thought you stole it from somewhere on the Internet. Then I started looking for things you got wrong/left out, because you asked me to, and I found...a couple.

Antonio is also Italian. Katerina is also Spanish. Mark in Spanish is actually Marcos. (Marco might be Italian.) Frederic in Spanish is Frederico. Stephano is Italian for Steven. Tomasso is Italian for Tomas. I also speculate that Lorenzo is Italian for Lawrence. And don't forget Pyotr! Aren't you studying Russian or something?

Good luck compiling the rest of this compelling database.

I made two catastrophic errors, and both in Spanish (ay ay ay!). Frederico is Federico (no r). And Katerina is Caterina. There. Now I can die without unfinished business.

If Frederick is Federico, then you may translate it to Russian as Fedor [fyodor]

AIEEE! You found MY sailboat? Cool! I had no idea the Prague computers stole it from me. It's actually a tiny thing I painted long ago, and then scanned onto the computer. It is my family's little sailboat (we really do have a pink, yellow and orange sail) that we have up north at our cabin/shack on a lake.

I'm glad you like Prague!!!
